Direct a Galileo Summer Camp

“I've always been motivated by the call to be the change I want to see in the world; Galileo taught me how.”
- Marie, Former Camp Director

Galileo is always looking for outstanding leaders to direct Camp Galileo and Galileo Summer Quest sites. Camp Directors assume overall leadership of a camp location, including staff selection and management of day-to-day operations. Camp Directors provide leadership and instructional supervision for staff, interact daily with parents and community members and are truly the face of Galileo in the communities they serve. Camp Directors also work closely with their teams, developing the creative, fun and wacky traditions that make each summer camp unique.

The Camp Director role begins in January, with a commitment of approximately 10 hours per week through early June (plus several weekend retreats), which fits nicely around school-year employment or graduate school. Then the role becomes full time for 6-8 weeks during the summer.

Galileo accepts applications for the Camp Director position year-round, and begins conducting interviews mid-summer for the following season. If you are passionate about education, love building and inspiring a team and are ready to take the first step toward a transformational summer experience, apply for a Camp Director role early. Positions fill on a rolling basis, so the earlier you apply, the better your chances of finding a fit.

What Makes This Role Exceptional

  • Create Lasting Impact: As the personality and spark behind your camp, you can develop meaningful, multi-year relationships with staff members, campers and families in your local community.
  • Inspire Kids: From classrooms to camp games, Camp Directors envision and create an environment that emphasizes fun and learning and inspires the next generation of innovators.
  • Build a Team: Select and hire top-notch professionals and aspiring educators, then lead and mentor your team to bring your summer vision to life. Develop your leadership skills through observing and giving feedback, bringing out the best in your staff and helping them to build their educational abilities.
  • Grow Professionally:  Receive abundant support and coaching from a selective team of like-minded and inspiring Galileo leaders, including returning Camp Directors.
  • Earn Significant Income: Earn $10-13,000 in your first year, with 20-40% increases in subsequent years.

What We’re Looking for in Camp Directors

  • Commitment: Because of the important role Camp Directors play in Galileo communities, we ask for a commitment of at least 3 summers.
  • Leadership: Camp Directors select and manage a team of 15-40 staff members, and must be motivational and inspirational leaders.
  • Experience: Though Galileo provides extensive training, this is a significant leadership position. We are looking for candidates with college degrees, who have several years of experience working with children and have demonstrated leadership and management ability.
  • Passion for Education and Working with Kids: Galileo is an innovative learning community, a place where risks are encouraged. It is also tons of fun – every day is a dress-up day and our mascot is a rubber chicken! Camp Directors drive the spirit of their camp through their playful, engaged and enthusiastic demeanor, while also overseeing the academic quality of their specific camp location.
  • Creativity: Every camp location has its own personality, which is shaped and inspired by the Camp Director. Camp Directors develop and implement ideas on a daily basis, creating their own community culture.
  • Organization: Camp Directors must be detail-oriented and accountable.
  • Spring/Summer Availability: Although the Camp Director position can generally be fulfilled around school-year employment or graduate school, it starts before most of our other summer jobs, demanding about 10 hours per week from January to early June, then shifting to full time during the summer.
