Galileo Summer Quest Camp Majors

Claymation | Digital Photography | Fashion Design | Go-Kart Makers

Junior M.D. | Magazine Makers | Video Game Design

Choose from one of our many extraordinary Majors, and dive into subjects you’re already passionate about or start exploring something new! You’ll use high-quality materials and the latest technology to develop your ideas, under the guidance of our experienced instructors. All Majors build toward an exciting culminating project.

Campers spend 2.5 hours per day in their Major, totaling 25 hours over 2 weeks!

Claymation
Combine your artistic, creative and technical skills to become the next great Claymation artist. Learn about stop-motion animation and time-lapse movies, then create your own Claymation film with advanced special effects and a soundtrack.

  • Learn how to use iStopMotion and iMovie, then collaborate with your partners on story and plot ideas, characters, backdrops and filming.
  • Investigate mouth movements and sound to give your characters a voice and emotions.
  • Quasars (7th-8th graders): Use wire armature, and learn specialized clay techniques to create explosions, falls and flight!

Digital Photography
Step behind the lens to capture your world in a whole new light. Explore different styles of photography, learn the functionality behind each of your camera’s features, and develop artistic ideas through composition, depth and lighting to create stunning photos!

  • Learn Adobe Photoshop Elements to edit your images’ lighting and balance.
  • Create a portfolio of printed images that showcases portraiture, documentary and action photography.
  • Quasars (7th-8th graders): Dive deeper into the incredible functions of a digital SLR to better understand aperture, shutter speed and other advanced camera functions.

Fashion Design
Learn the ins and outs of the fashion world, from idea conception and sketching all the way to production. Small groups, or “fashion houses,” collaborate together to discuss inspiration, color palettes and trend forecasting, then develop a final line and show it off on the runway at a red carpet fashion show.

  • Become a pro on industry standard sewing machines and create an original garment.
  • Take home a portfolio of all your designs at the end of the session.
  • Quasars (7th-8th graders): Design and build an enticing storefront display to match your fashion line, and become an expert in visual merchandising!

Go-Kart Makers
Build your very own Soap-Box Derby car from scratch! Go-kart kits are used for the foundation, but you'll have the chance to engineer and customize your non-motorized kart with your own details and special features. At the end of the session, compete in a series of races to test the speed and agility of your cars. Don't forget to drive your car home with you when you leave!

  • Learn how to safely and efficiently use woodworking and workshop tools such as power drills and handheld saws.
  • Explore the aerodynamics and physics behind speedy vehicles, and understand how a go-kart’s components work together
  • Quasars (7th-8th graders): Customize your kart to travel faster, brake harder and look slick!

Junior M.D.
Work together with your fellow pre-med’s to unearth what makes the human body tick. Investigate the body’s systems, learn about related symptoms and illnesses, and use your bedside manner to diagnose each other. You’ll pass your Galileo boards at the end of the week!

  • Dissect various organs including a cow eye, heart and lungs, then build your own model lungs!
  • Travel through the entire digestive process as a piece of food!
  • Quasars (7th-8th graders): Practice real-life first aid! Work with fake blood and bandages to learn how we care for injuries.

Magazine Makers
Join the Galileo publishing house and create a publication to be proud of! Learn tricks of the trade and hone your reporting skills, then see all your brilliant writing and design ideas come to life on the printed page.

  • Use industry software Adobe InDesign for design, formatting, illustrations and splash.
  • Develop an advertisement for a new brand, then spice up your images with Photoshop Elements.
  • Quasars (7th-8th graders): Develop more complex visual design skills through InDesign tricks of the trade.

Video Game Design
From platforms to puzzlers, learn every skill necessary to make your own 2D video games. In this Major, you’ll master real computer programming concepts and leave with your very own multi-level game!

  • Learn key computer programming concepts and work with the exciting Multimedia Fusion 2 software package.
  • Explore the techniques used by pros to conceptualize new game ideas and develop all aspects of game play.
  • Quasars(7th-8th graders): Try your hand at advanced programming and video game design concepts, like how to build character select screens through global variables!
