Camp Galileo 2010 Themes

picOcean Expeditions: An Integrated Art & Science Experience

All this week, discover the magic of the ocean from the viewpoint of both an artist and a scientist. Delve into the beauty and mystery of Earth’s ocean environments. Explore an ocean ecosystem and learn about the intricate relationships between the land, water, plants and animals. Join Cluck Cousteau as he travels to different parts of the underwater world in search of the missing pieces to his treasure map.

What is an “Integrated Art & Science Experience?” (New for 2010!)
During this week only, campers will still participate in art, science and outdoor rotations, but all three will focus on the Oceans theme with related activities.

Nebulas (entering Kindergarten): Pacific Ocean Rocky Shore
Art: Creatures from the Not So Deep
  • Make a hermit crab and sea anemone that search the ocean for food together.
  • Create a camouflage design on a research vehicle you build in science.
  • Learn about tide pool textures, then make your own textured paintbrush to use in a sea life painting.
Science: Rocky Shore Discovery
  • Make an “aquascope” that helps scientists study ocean animals and plants.
  • Build a research vehicle that can explore the rocky shore.
  • Design an animal that can filter and eat tiny floating creatures.
Outdoors
  • Swim across the ocean playing Lifeguard Tag.
  • Have an underwater Freeze Dance party with sea stars, hermit crabs and turtles.
  • Make giant air bubbles and whirlpools while playing Parachute Games.
Stars (entering 1st-2nd): Arctic Polar Ice Cap
Art: Visions of Ice and Color
  • Learn about the Inuit culture and create a mask for a ceremonial dance.
  • Sculpt a sea-going mammal, such as a walrus, narwhal or Arctic seal.
  • Make a collage of the “northern polar lights,” also known as the Aurora Borealis.
 Science: Adventure in the Arctic
  • Learn how Arctic animals adapt to living in a cold, harsh environment and create your own animal.
  • Discover how Arctic animals have special adaptations for moving on ice, then design feet for a polar bear and seal.
  • Build a research vessel that can navigate the Arctic Ocean as ice breaks up in the spring.
Outdoors
  • Swim across the ocean in a game of Octopus, Octopus.
  • Chase away the seabirds while playing Duck Duck Sploosh.
  • Rescue pirate treasure in a teambuilding game called Marble Madness.
Supernovas (entering 3rd-5th): Mesoamerican Coral Reef
Art: Coral Reefs: Jewels of the Sea
  • Build a coral reef installation in your classroom, representing ocean plants and animals.
  • Learn about the ancient Mesoamerican Olmec culture and sculpt a colossal head.
  • Create a mixed media collage using bright Guatemalan textiles. Explore shapes, patterns and vibrant underwater colors.
  Science: Explore the Mesoamerican Reef
  • Discover the building blocks of the coral reef. Make a model of a single polyp and then construct the entire reef structure.
  • Build a research vehicle that can safely navigate through a coral reef without harming it.
  • Learn about dangers to the survival of coral reefs, and build tools that can test the health of a reef.
Outdoors
  • Work together to find lost treasure in a game of Dolphins and Divers.
  • Get silly with flying meatballs in a wet and wild game of Star Wars.
  • Move together like a giant snail in a game of Cross the Great Divide.
