picAmusement Park Engineers & Medieval Art

Campers loved King Rubber Chicken last summer, and our medieval leader is back with a special gift to his kingdom – a new amusement park! But what rides can he build that will entertain his subjects? Demonstrate Newton’s laws and other scientific principles when you build exciting rides that spin, swing, bump and zoom up and down tracks. To complement this interactive science undertaking, you’ll explore the art of castles, knights, dragons and horses across a variety of media.

Here is a snapshot of this week’s projects for each age group:

Nebulas (entering Kindergarten)

Art: Merlin’s Medieval Magic
  • Learn the story of Merlin and make a magical wand.
  • Sculpt a sleek horse with a special medieval blanket.
  • Design and play a medieval bowling game called Skittles.
Science: Go For A Ride!
  • Learn about potential and kinetic energy and build a bumper car.
  • Design a parachute and understand how air slows down falling objects.
  • Make a boat ride that splashes through a log chute and zooms across a pool.
Outdoors
  • Become king’s court jesters in a game called Will You Smile For Me?
  • Pretend to ride horses in a barnyard version of the game Shipwreck.
  • Create see-saws and merry-go-rounds while playing Parachute Games.
Stars (entering 1st-2nd)
Art: Kings, Queens, and Medieval Fun
  • Dress like a medieval lady or knight by making a surcoat and shield.
  • Make a puppet and stage a medieval puppet show.
  • Design your own stick horse, and ride it in a parade!
Science: Rockin’ Rides
  • Understand potential and kinetic energy, learn how pendulums work and demonstrate Newton’s Laws of Motion
  • Construct a drawbridge with pulley systems for King Rubber Chicken, then create an amazing pendulum ride.
  • Get a bird’s eye view of the amusement park by building a soaring skyway.
Outdoors
  • Juggle like a court jester in the game Group Pass.
  • Cross the enchanted forest in a game of Troll Tag.
  • Practice Noodle Jousting and other knight-in-training games.
Supernovas (entering 3rd-5th)
Art: Medieval Dragons and Castles
  • Practice sculpting techniques and learn how to make a medieval mosaic.
  • Create a medieval stained glass window, and build a castle with parapets, towers and turrets.
  • Use professional paper mache techniques to make a horse or dragon.
Science: Royal Roller Coasters
  • Learn how to build electric circuits and use them to power a roller coaster up a steep hill.
  • Create the ultimate roller coaster! Start with basic designs, then add hills, jumps and a winding corkscrew.
Outdoors
  • Travel through a forest filled with Giants, Wizards and Elves.
  • Use problem solving to repair the drawbridge in a challenge called From Here to There.
  • Work together to create amusement park rides such as the Tilt-O-Circle and Chariot Wheel.
