Adventures in Flight & Egyptian Art
This week you’ll travel through time to discover ancient Egyptian art and solve an intriguing mystery along the way. Learn about the principles behind flying animals and machines, and meet famous pioneers like the Wright Brothers and Amelia Earhart. Then visit the Valley of the Kings and the Temple at Karnak, where you’ll make amulets, mummies, Egyptian masks and other art from the era.
Here is a snapshot of this week’s projects for each age group:
Nebulas (entering Kindergarten)
Art: Where’s My Mummy?
- Create your own amulet to wear around your neck.
- Make your own mummy and build a mummy case.
- Make an Egyptian god or goddess mask.
Science: Flying & Gliding Animals
- Learn how animals use their wings to fly and glide.
- Discover the magic of bat flight and make bat wings you can wear!
- Build a soaring bird and a straw glider.
Outdoors
- Listen to air traffic control in a game of Red Light, Green Light.
- Make the Egyptian exhibit come alive in the game Night at the Museum.
- Create a mummy in the game Toilet Paper Wrap.
Stars (entering 1st-2nd)
Art: Exploring the Temple of Karnak
- Create an animal collage on papyrus.
- Build an Egyptian temple and learn about obelisks.
- Go on an archaeological dig and discover ancient symbols.
Science: Gliders, Kites & Hot Air Balloons
- Learn how gravity, lift, thrust and drag interact during flight.
- Design toys that fly, including aerobes and hang gliders.
- Discover what makes helium balloons rise and fall, then create your own balloon basket.
Outdoors
- Recover an ancient artifact in the game Steal the Artifact.
- Cross the Valley of the Kings playing the game Rock, Tree, Bridge.
- Work as a team to catch the Serpent’s Tail.
Supernovas (entering 3rd-5th)
Art: King Tut’s Tomb
- Craft your own Egyptian mask, cover it with plaster gauze and decorate it with metallic paint.
- Create a life-size mummy case, then paint it with hieroglyphics.
- Design a magical amulet using gold foil, beads and low relief techniques.
Science: Fabulous Flying Machines
- Use these concepts of gravity, thrust, drag and angle of attack to invent your own flying machine!
- Design rubber band-powered paper helicopters.
- Build an airplane with materials like balsa wood, then motorize it and fly it in the Galileo Air Show.
Outdoors
- Travel through a pyramid filled with Mummies, Scorpions, and Cats.
- Recover the missing jewels in a game of Osiris’s Jewels.
- Transport an ancient artifact through a obstacle course.
